Aber Mawr, near Mathry, June 1998
This small bay was to have formed part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's grand plan for a harbour complex to rival nearby Fishguard. It was never completed. The beach is backed by a huge pebble bank which was thrown up by the treacherous 1859 storms. Under the water and occasionally revealed at low tide is a sunken forest, one of a number in the area. A small white cottage off the picture to the right was where the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable came ashore.
